We are moulding a new 8ft GRP tender to help raise funds for the Mai STar II restoration protect

We are now moulding a GRP tender which we will put up for sale when it is completed to raise funds for both Chance and the Mai Star II restoration projects. Follow along as we mould this 8 ft tender. Which when complete will sold to give us more funds for the projects.

Making a start on removing the last of the starboard sheer stake plank

Yesterday I started to remove the last part of the starboard sheer stake plank to gain access to the back of the beam shelf/ gunwale to be able to pass the new steamed oak ribs into place after the old doubled and sistered ribs are removed. As you can see from this photo I have  uncovered a can of worms in the way of other work that is going to have to be done before any other work can be done on the sheer stake or any other part of the boat in this area. There is an area of expending foam in a void space behind the forward apron of the stem, there is a lot of checking in the breasthook and a former colony of woodworm long since gone away. So I am will have to make a new laminated breasthook and also do a repair to the upper section of stem to remove any rot that as travelled down thew stem that can not be seen from just looking at the exposed part. Major progress on Mai Star II's foredeck beams and carlins and mast block and post.

The apprentice boat builder Ethan as been working hard on getting the foredeck beams finished off and making up two new carlins and side deck beams/ Mai Star II needed to have replacement carlins as the old carlins were broken and rotten at the ends as were the short side deck beams which were in a poor condition. The next job to do before we can fit the new carlins and side deck beams is to make up a temporary aft cabin deck beam to go across the aft end of the cabin to fit the carlins. This is while we make up the vertical posts to fix the inboard end of the aft cabin beams.  The new mast pad fitted into the aft two deck beams as the original mast pad was, the only difference this time is that this pad will not have a hole drilled in the middle as per the original pad. This is because this time the mast which was cut down at sometime in the past will be fitted to a taberance . There will be a mast support post fitted to the underside of the deck as it was before the restoration....

It is Christmas time again, a chance to have a break and plan for the New Year.

This past year has been a busy year with trips to and from Woodplumpton to work on our other project boat Chance. Chance is now back in Essex at Titchmarsh Marina  less than a mile from my own workshop.  Before you ask why is Chance not in my yard, the answer my yard is not large enough to fit her in and so Chance is in a nearby boatyard where I can work on her between my clients boat jobs or when I have any spare time to work on her.  Now it is the time when most people put their boat restoration projects to bed until after the Christmas break. We are doing the same. Like other people we all need a break and a rest from working on our projects and the weather is not conducive to working outside in the cold weather unless you have too. Simon as done this for the past 46 years as a boat builder and this year is going to take a well earned break from working on boats over the Christmas break. We have not stopped planning what the jobs we wish to achieve on both Mai Star II ...
